Filtration 101: MERV Ratings and Air Quality

A person wipes a glass surface with a green cloth.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It rates the effectiveness of the filter’s ability to remove dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria, and other common particles found in the home. The ratings range from 1 to 16. Sixteen is the best possible performance at removing particles .3 to 10 microns in size.

We Recommend MERV 10 -13

You may think that higher ratings make the filter better and this is not true. Higher ratings can also mean less air passes through. Resistance to airflow renders your system ineffective and is not good for air quality in the home. Click here to read about the components of healthy air in the home.

Filters Alone Will Not Sanitize Your Air

Filters are a vital component of your HVAC system, but they do not act alone in the fight to improve air quality.

Add UV Light for More Protection

Ultraviolet, more commonly referred to as UV, lights have been widely adapted for many uses including germicidal lamps in food establishments and sterilizing hospitals. Of course, we use it in an HVAC setting for sanitizing the air in your home and extending the life of your system because they do more than sanitize the air.

UV lights also sanitize your equipment. UV lights are effective in controlling mold inside the air handler and coil. Some customers with respiratory problems are able to tell when the UV bulb is out. Will it be that noticeable for you?

Air Purifiers

Whole-home air purification push purified air throughout the home to improve air quality. They can filter out pollution and extend the life of your system.

Regular Maintenance

We service our customers at least once per year via our Clean & Check service. Not only is this service critical to your warranty, it also keeps your system clean to ensure there is not build-up of mold, dust, and other debris that circulate through the home. In addition, regular service alerts you to potential or existing problems with your system early (which may save money with early intervention).

Improving Your Air Quality

Air quality has been a discussion in the HVAC community for a long time. Research has consistently shown the importance of proper ventilation, airflow, humidification, purification, and filtration. Like anything in life, a multi-pronged approach is best. Call Sal’s Heating and Cooling, Inc. Plumbing and Sewer for more information today!
